Conventional solar cells contain serially switched cells (as in garden lighting as sold in DIY stores), which together have enough output to charge a battery. Only when all the parts together contribute and if the sum of their efforts is enough, will the battery be charged.
A big problem with the professional application of this technique is partial shading. Leaves, sand, dirt or tire tracks can cover up one or more solar cell segments. This results in a total output which is too low to charge the battery. The same will happen on a cloudy day, when there is too little light to charge the battery. The battery will then be empty after a few days.
This new innovative technique centres around a single solar cell. This means partial shading is no longer a problem. The efficient converter makes sure even small currents are transformed into energy for the battery. This means that even with low light conditions, the battery will be charged, when the weather is overcast or the solar cell is partly covered.
Because these products use solar energy, they are a green, smart and inexpensive way (no need to lay a network of electrical cables) for guided parking systems, both in new and existing parking facilities.
